Tips For Reading Success

Daily Reading

  • Along with the required homework, please be sure your child practices their decodable book. Reading out loud to you while using their finger to track the words is part of our 15 minutes of required reading homework.

Daily Reading Tips

  • Does your Champion already have the decodable memorized? Have them try reading it backwards. Yes! It’s silly but it makes them focus on reading the actual word instead of reciting the already memorized story.
  • Split the reading time up into 2 sessions for our wigglier Champions.
  • If your child finds the decodables too easy, read a more challenging book. Our decodables will get increasingly more challenging as we go along.
  • Create a Word Wall using the words your child struggles with while reading. Add any words your Champion is struggling with to their Word Wall and have them practice every day. Switch out words as needed. Word Walls can be created using sticky notes or index cards.
  • Add a CHAMPION WORD WALL and celebrate the words your child has mastered!
  • Be sure you (or your child) is tracking while reading. This ensures your child is reading accurately and not skipping words or lines, or reading words incorrectly.
  • Remember, reading can take place anywhere! Find a fun nook at your local library! Pack a picnic and some books! Snuggle on the couch or make it a bedtime routine!Happy Reading! =0)
