Educating the Whole Child
The curriculum of OPA is consistent with the adopted State Standards expectations. Understanding students’ areas of strength and the development of the total child is emphasized at Oxford Preparatory Academy.
Textbooks focusing on State Standards have been selected for use in grades TK-8, along with supplementary materials, to teach the content areas below.The following is a brief summary of the general curriculum studied in the elementary and junior high school years.
The English-Language Arts curriculum is comprised of a comprehensive and balanced reading program used in all grade levels. Students describe and connect the essential ideas, arguments, and perspective of the various texts, by using their knowledge of structure, organization, and purpose. In the primary grades, there is an emphasis on phonemic awareness and a systematic phonics instructional approach is utilized. In all grades, reading for informational text is a major focus of instruction in all curricular areas.
Our intensive writing program, taught throughout the curriculum, utilizes the Nancy Fetzer Writing Program to focus on the Writing and Language Common Core State Standards.
This course covers Common Core State Standards in grades TK-8 in the following strands:
- Reading for Literature;
- Reading for Informational Text;
- Reading Foundational Skills (Grades TK – 5th only);
- Speaking and Listening; and
